What is psychoeducation?
Our psychoeducational services aim to support children in developing their strengths and adaptive skills to navigate everyday challenges. Through a compassionate approach involving the psychoeducator, parents, and other significant adults in the child’s life, children build essential skills for their well-being, such as emotional regulation, healthy social relationships, self-confidence, cooperation, and autonomy.
By considering both the child’s individual characteristics and the environment in which they grow and evolve, psychoeducation allows for the implementation of concrete strategies that foster development and overall well-being.
What is art therapy?
Our art therapy services offer therapeutic support through a creative process, helping children navigate emotional, relational, or behavioral challenges, as well as those related to self-esteem.
Through artistic creation, metaphors and imagery children are offered a safe and supportive space to express feelings and thoughts that may sometimes be difficult to put into words. The art therapist uses materials and the creative process as tools for expression and communication, fostering greater self-understanding, healthy emotional expression, and a more harmonious inner balance.
By taking into account each child’s unique characteristics and lived experiences, art therapy provides an opportunity to explore their inner world and develop coping strategies that support overall well-being.
Psychoeducation or Art Therapy?
Both approaches are highly complementary. They can use artistic, educational, and expressive activities or experiences as concrete intervention tools. Each requires graduate-level university training, allowing for in-depth clinical analysis while providing structured and individualized support.
Psychoeducation is primarily oriented toward:
• The development of adaptive skills
• Observable behaviors and their underlying needs
• Intervention strategies
• Development of skills through various mediums such as role-playing, drawing, books, games, and discussions, to promote integration and practical application of learning
Art therapy is primarily oriented toward:
• Emotional expression and well-being
• The child’s inner experience
• The use of art, metaphors, and imagery as mediums to express what may be difficult to verbalize
• The development of emotional expression and a deeper understanding of one’s inner experience, fostering well-being through the creative process within a safe therapeutic environment
In both cases, a trusting relationship and a deep understanding of the child’s needs are at the heart of the process!
What does the support process involve?
Each support process is unique. Generally speaking, when services are requested by parents, the process includes:
- An initial contact by email or phone
- An assessment process, which typically includes: One or two meetings with the parents, one meeting with the child, at the parents’ request an exchange with other significant individuals in the child’s life (e.g., educator or teacher)
- A meeting with the parents to review the assessment. During this meeting, we normally determine together the most appropriate follow-up plan as well as the goals to prioritize.
- A personalized intervention plan is written and shared with the parents.
- The beginning of follow-up sessions according to the agreed-upon plan. Ongoing assessment of needs and goals takes place throughout the support process.
For service requests coming from educational or childcare settings, once we receive your request, we will assess your needs and explore the different possible forms of collaboration we can have with you.
Depending on your context, this may include support for children in group or individual settings, consultation or advisory support for staff, as well as the implementation of workshops or training sessions tailored to your needs.
How many sessions should be anticipated for my child?
This is a question we are frequently asked, and while we understand the desire for clarity, each child’s needs and pace of development are unique. Some families benefit from a few months of support, while others prefer longer-term guidance to help navigate various challenges or developmental stages.
Our services are entirely voluntary, and decisions regarding the continuation and frequency of sessions are always yours.
